Resolution on the War in Ukraine

Dec 3, 2022

Regarding the war in Ukraine, the 52nd Congress of Lutte Ouvrière voted unanimously for the following resolution:

The war in Ukraine—opposing the imperialist powers of NATO to Russia with the skin of the Ukrainian people, but also of the Russian people—threatens the whole world with a generalized explosion.

Whatever the future realization of this threat and the path that leads to it, and whoever the opposing sides are, it will be a war of the imperialist bourgeoisie against the peoples who are dragged along as cannon fodder.

To avoid war, the peoples cannot count on the imperialist bourgeoisie, its politicians and its general military staffs who, on the contrary, are methodically preparing the general conflagration by accumulating arms and bringing the populations into line. The workers must oppose the war with their means and their class weapons, with the perspective of transforming the war into a civil war against the bourgeoisie.

Conscious workers must refuse the warlike mechanism that is being set up. They must reject any form of sacred union behind their bourgeoisie and the state that defends its interests. They must be suspicious of all the false propaganda of the ruling class, starting with the defense of the fatherland. Behind these words lie only the interests of the capitalist class and the richest.

With regard to the war already present in Europe, the workers must not take sides, neither with Putin’s Russia nor with Zelensky’s Ukraine under the protection of the imperialist powers. They must reject all the political clans of the imperialist bourgeoisie, those who openly speak warlike language as well as those who claim to work for peace through negotiations. The workers serve their own interest by taking up the slogan of the German revolutionary Karl Liebknecht: “The main enemy is in our own country,” here in France, in Russia, in the Ukraine and wherever the masses are distressed by the preparations for generalized war.

Overthrowing the power of the bourgeoisie and the domination of imperialism over the world is the only thing that can avert the threat of world war, ensure fraternal relations between peoples and create the conditions for their collaboration for the common good of humanity.
